A brand new sensory lab program will be implemented into the curriculum at Lake Wylie Elementary School for the 2018-2019 school year. This program will utilize mindfulness techniques and strategies and give students an opportunity to hone their sensory and motor skills, subsequently improving their focus, memory, and attention in the classroom.
Sensory labs aim to develop the whole student, and do so through movement. As research has shown, there is a strong link between movement and learning. By developing sensory skills, students are better able to improve their memory, stay on task and focused in the classroom, and regulate their emotions through enhanced self awareness.
Ms. Abigail Miller, the physical education teacher, will head this program.
“I truly believe in the positive impact a school sensory program can have in helping to cultivate more mindful and engaged learners.”
She is seeking help in purchasing the equipment and products and has listed the program on the Donors Choose website. Please see https://www.donorschoose.org/project/cultivating-mindful-and-focused-learners/3382051/.
