Community Partners are needed to help implement literacy-building practices for students and their families at Berewick and Steele Creek Elementary Schools, with the support of Read Charlotte.  (See information on the organization below.)

A team from the Steele Creek community will work with the principals of Berewick and Steele Creek.  They will meet monthly to organize a set of literacy-building activities recommended by Read Charlotte and supported by the principals of both schools.  The team will provide connections and ideas to solicit help from businesses, churches and other faith-based groups, neighborhood organizations, and non-profits.  Read Charlotte representatives will participate to provide guidance to “stack and align” carefully selected activities.

The activities fit under these initiatives:

  1. Helping children build home libraries;
  2. Empowering families to support literacy at home.
  3. Providing high quality, targeted tutoring (Kindergarten through 3rdgrade).
  4. Stop summer reading loss.

Read Charlotte Background:

Read Charlotte is a 10-year community initiative that unites families, educators and community partners to improve children’s literacy from birth to third grade with a goal of doubling reading proficiency from 39% to 80%. Reading proficiency at third grade is a critical predictor of school, career and life success. Children who are not reading at grade level by third grade are 4 times more likely to drop out of high school.

Read Charlotte has established a network of Charlotte-based agencies as key partners and resources to help targeted schools get 80% of third graders reading at “College and Career Ready.”  Supporters include many of the well-known local foundations and businesses as well as UNCC, CMS, City of Charlotte and the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library.
